On finishing the «Grandpa»
I started this game somewhere at the beginning of 2023. I wanted to make my own first little funny platformer game (which is heavily inspired by the Downwell game). I thought I would finish it in a month or so, but then life made some corrections to my available time, and I couldn't.
I've returned to it a couple more times, adding some new features, and I've added more than «teeny-tiny little platformer» actually requires, I guess. But I couldn't build a routine around working on this project and at some point, I sorta gave up.
At the beginning of this year, it dawned on me that I still want to make some fun little projects of my own. But I have to finish the «Grandpa» first, right? Thankfully, itch saved me once more with the Finally Finish Something game jam. Nice way to re-enter the hobby gamedev, isn't it?
Just to sum Grandpa up, here's a couple of things I'm proud of:
- My first platformer ever, hooray!
- My first procedural level generation (which actually generates levels this time)
- Loved using Kenney's assets for everything -- level, enemies, UI
- My first story (as in literature) you could unlock piece by piece while playing the game
- Also while writing said story I felt emotional a couple of times, so that's a nice bonus
Play «Grandpa» right here, it works in web. And there are Android and Windows builds as well.
Also my time logger says I've spent 75 hours working on this game, which is two 40-working-hours weeks, or four 20hrs weeks for us lazy freelancers here. So, I guess I finished that game in a month after all.
